Project Case Study

Background

A new era in world sport commenced in the Summer of 2018 with Glasgow and Berlin hosting the inaugural European Championships. The multi-sport event was staged over 12 prestigious sites in Glasgow and throughout Scotland during an 11 day celebration of world class sport.

The Championships were broadcast across Europe, with a potential television audience of over one billion. 

Whilst venues such as the iconic Emirates Arena and stunning SSE Hydro were already well equipped to host such sports events, the increased technical broadcasting requirements required additional standby power availability. The Technical Equipment Racks and Event Control Rooms for each venue also required Uninterruptible Power Supplies to ensure any power related issues would not interrupt the broadcasting schedule.

Requirement

UPS Power Services were approached by a leading Scottish M&E contractor to participate in a competitive tender to produce a full technical and commercially compliant bid for the UPS solutions.

The Championships required all 12 venues to be covered with 31 x Uninterruptible Power Supplies with a back-up period of up to two hours in the event of a total mains failure.

The delivery, installation and commissioning of the UPS was to be co-ordinated with Aggreko who supplied over 60 standby generators, and also with the local venues which were being utilised by the public until a few days before the opening ceremonies at the beginning of August.

The Project

Strict Deadline & Limited Delivery Window

With access to the venues restricted until the opening of the Championships, the project required delivery, offloading, positioning, installation and commissioning of all 31 UPS and batteries to be completed over a period of just four days.

Diligent Product Selection

When reviewing the requirements for broadcasting, networking, fibre connections, event control and anti-doping areas, UPS Power Services chose to utilise a range of Tripp Lite Online Double Conversion UPS to provide the highest level of power protection.

As a premium Tripp Lite Partner, UPS Power Services had available stock of the Smart-Online UPS range and associated batteries completing delivery to all sites within five days from being awarded the project. 

The Tripp Lite Smart Online range of UPS uses an Online Double Conversion technology providing the highest level of power protection which continually converts AC power into filtered DC power, then resynthesises it back to AC power with a pure sine wave. The range also provides zero transfer time to battery when a mains failure occurs.

Meticulous Logistics Management

The equipment for the entire project was delivered in advance to a secure logistics hub in Glasgow, preventing any possible courier delays or accidental damage. The UPS Power Services installation teams then delivered, sited and installed each UPS system at the local venue.

The install teams worked closely with the other stake holders to ensure each site was delivered, installed, commissioned and handed over to each Venue Technology Manager ready for power protection before the games commenced.

Robust Risk Assessments

Venues such as Cathkin Braes which hosted mountain biking and Loch Lomand with open water swimming had constructed temporary structures for the Event Control and Broadcasting Technology Equipment installation. With Health and Safety being paramount during construction, each UPS Power Services install team attended a H&S site induction before commencing the works. The full project management, including compiling site-specific risk assessments and method statements for the works onsite was handled by UPS Power Services.

Impeccable Time Management

The time scale of contract award to the commissioning of the last UPS unit was completed in just two weeks. All aspects of the project from stock availability, specialist delivery and engineer resources was completed in line with client expectation.

The utilisation of Tripp Lite UPS by UPS Power Services for this project builds on the recent Premier Partner accreditation. 

Tripp Lite UPS stock up to 100kVA is now held centrally in UPS Power Services new Chesterfield facility for fast deployment on urgent replacement UPS requirements. 

As a Premier Partner, UPS Power Services also has priority access to the Tripp Lite main EMEA Hub in the Netherlands, meaning any Tripp Lite UPS can be onsite and installed within five working days.

Background

Overbury Plc is the UK’s leading fit out specialist with over 500 employees nationwide. As part of the prestigious Morgan Sindall Group, they also specialise in regeneration and construction projects.
When a major public service client located in the heart of the City of London required full refurbishment of their headquarters, Overbury were selected to handle the project. This included a full electrical refit with new standby power generation provision and improved power protection.

Flexible Approach

The City of London area has a resident population of 9,000 but with a daily influx of approximately 400,000 commuters, the project for the refurbishment on an “operational” site would require very specific expertise, meticulous planning and a flexible project management approach.

The Project

Full Turnkey Solution

UPS Power Services were approached by Total Power Group to assist with the specification, supply, installation and handover of a 300kW, fully redundant modular UPS as part of their full turnkey power package. This included a plant room diesel generator, acoustics package and new LV switchgear, all manufactured in their UK Midlands headquarters.

Logistically Challenging

Initially logistical challenges meant the UPS had to be carefully split at UPS Power Services premises, specially repackaged, transported to site and re-assembled in situ. All equipment had to be carefully unloaded on the mega busy Bishopsgate Street, opposite Liverpool Street Station.

Operational Continuity Maintained

Thirty minutes of battery autonomy, were constructed onsite with six tonnes of battery blocks transported around challenging objects, while maintaining access and giving priority to the operational public service client.

The UPS was assembled and pre-commissioned on a temporary electrical supply in anticipation for handover during a short power down window, where all elements of the electrical infrastructure were tested together and proved on-site before handover back to the client.

 The Solution

250kW of Power with N+1 Redundancy

Working in an existing building with current electrical supply constraints and physical space limitations did not cause any reason for compromise to be taken on power protection and redundancy.

The 250kW modular UPS was configured to intelligently work with the new Himonisa generator to enable a minimum-sizing ratio between the two. This meant a full 250kW of power was available with N+1 redundancy for load requirements. The Yuasa battery blocks were of high rate discharge 12-year design life with fire retardant casing, providing 30 minutes of runtime at full load.

UPS Power Services were chosen by Total Power Group to project manage the delivery, position, DC build and UPS assembly whilst providing recommendations on the UPS electrical installation and cooling.

Emergency Diagnosis

Waterline Media contacted UPS Power Services for some technical assistance and although not under a traditional service contract, the on call engineer assisted in diagnosis of the fault on the APC Smart UPS.

Waterline Media had already purchased a replacement battery from the UPS Power Services online store in anticipation, but our engineer suggested there maybe further repairs required.

Engineer Support

We offered an engineer attendance to site for further diagnosis and repair, a returns option for repair at our workshop or a new replacement Tripp-Lite UPS with warranty, which could be delivered from UK stock immediately.

Based on the age of the original APC UPS and costs of engineer callout for repair, Waterline Media chose to invest in a new UPS to safely support their critical business infrastructure moving forward into the future.

In order to offer best in business and affordable hosting solutions, Fast2Host Ltd owns and operates its own datacentre where all power supplies are protected by a three phase UPS, an external maintenance bypass switch, extended battery cubicles and a standby diesel generator with 48 hours of fuel. Enterprise clients also have full N+1 redundancy options available to avoid any single points of failure. This enables Fast2Host to offer a 100% SLA on power availability.

Mains Power Issue

During repeated mains disturbances in the area during December 2017, it became apparent that one of the battery blocks (out of 180 in total) had unexpectedly failed, resulting in the full backup time being unavailable. Quick to respond, Fast2Host immediately set about procuring a full replacement of all battery blocks and subsequent rigorous testing to ensure peace of mind over the Christmas and New year break.

Speedy Response

Initially, Fast2Host contacted UPS Power Services for some technical support and battery advice after discovering the failed block. Our engineers discussed bypassing the unaffected strings and isolating the failed battery. When Fast2Host requested a quotation for the full battery set to be replaced within 24 hours, our technical support team put forward our recommendations for the most applicable replacement battery, which could immediately be delivered from UK stock.

Complete Peace of Mind

The replacements on the Riello 3 phase UPS were delivered and installed by UPS Power Services’ own employees and the exhausted cells were safely removed for disposal.  UPS Power Services rescheduled other non-essential works, so that full proof testing including a full black building test could be completed that evening. The monitoring software was checked and the client left with full peace of mind so all employees could enjoy their Christmas Dinner!
